Douglas Matthews

Brother Matthews has been a member of Gamma Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity since June 1, 1979. He attended Galveston Public Schools including Central High and graduating from Ball High in 1969. He then attended Lamar University on a football scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Government.

Brother Matthews currently works at UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch) doing federal government relations for 20 years. Originally hired in 1996 as Director of External Affairs, in September 2008 he was promoted to assistant vice president for government relations.

His professional career prior to UTMB includes 21 years working for the City of Galveston:

a. 11 years as the city manager and chief executive officer,

b. 7 years as assistant city manager, and

c. 3 years as grants coordinator.

In 1989, he was appointed a member of the Board of Regents for Lamar University by then Texas Governor Bill Clements. He has received numerous awards including Galveston Chamber Economic Developer of the Year in 1984, Distinguished Lamar Alumni May 1994, Lamar Athletic Hall of Honor Inductee in September 1985.

In January 2003, he was ordained as a minister in the Catholic Church where he assist the priest during Mass.

Brother Matthews is married to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Member Janis Frank Matthews of Beaumont and together they have 3 adult children Murry, Ashley, Alexandra and one grandchild, Landon Douglas Clay.
