Brother James Sweatt, Jr.

James Sweatt Jr. GALVESTON – James L. Sweatt Jr., 76, died Sunday at St. Mary’s Hospital following a lengthy illness. Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Green’s Funeral Directors Chapel, the Rev. M.J. Leonard officiating. Visitors may call after 4 p.m. today. A devotional service will be held today 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Cemetery.

Mr. Sweatt was born July 4, 1910 in Houston. He was a retired educator of 27 years, a member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church, a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and of the Adelphia Club.

Mr. Sweatt was born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. James Leonard Sweatt Sr. and was one of seven children. His father worked as a railway postal clerk and his mother worked as a seamstress.

James graduated from Jack Yates High School in Houston. He received a bachelor’s degree from Wiley College and his master of science degree from the University of Michigan. He did graduate work at the University of Colorado and Texas Southern University in both psychology and counseling, as well as school administration.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Mary Lee Sweatt of Galveston; one brother, Wendell Sweatt of Houston; and a host of other relatives and friends.
