Melvin Elijah Howard, Jr. 72, of 1215 Ave. K, Galveston, died Sunday morning at John Sealy Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at St Paul United Methodist Church, the Rev. L. Flanagan officiating.
Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Strode-Armstrong Mortuary.
A Wake will take place from 7 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Mr. Howard was born May 26, 1907 in Victoria, Texas. He was a 1924 graduate of Central High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Wiley College and a masters degree from Texas Southern University. He was a former principal and superintendent of schools in Kendleton, Texas, and was a charter member of Gamma Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Survivors include his cousins, Willie H. Howard of Victoria and Charles L. Johnson of Galveston; godchildren, Frederica Harrell and Theodore Lewis, both of Austin, Phillip Harris and JoChon Dobbins, both of Galveston.
Visitors may call at the funeral home today after 3 p.m.
