On June 29, 2015, Elbert “Baby Brother” Clay transitioned peacefully at home after a lengthy illness.
Elbert was born November 20, 1933, in Galveston. He was a 1951 graduate of Central High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Prairie View A & M University; and his Master’s Degree from Texas Southern University. He served two years in the Marine Corp and was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a long standing deacon of the Avenue L Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Clay dedicated his life impacting the lives of students in the Galveston Independent School District, his community, church family, and having an even greater impact on his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and wife of 50 years, Carrie Thomas Clay.
He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Anita Harris Wright, Deatra Gills, and Chanda Clay; grandchildren, Paul Wright, Chelsey, Ashton, Hillary, and Trevor Edior, Brittni Brown, Tabitha, and Nzinga Gills, Brenae Hardeman, Jalen White, and Taylor Jefferson; as well as a host of nieces and nephews; good friends, Bubba Pierce, Willie “Pookie” Guidry, and Leroy Rodriguez; as well as three godchildren, Launita Robinson, Burkley Harkless and Alyce Como; inlaws .
