EDWARD LATEN CLACK passed away in Galveston, Texas on January 21, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born November 8, 1935 to loving parents James and Zelma Clack in Gonzales, Texas. He graduated with honors from Prairie View A & M University in 1958. As a distinguished member of the ROTC, Edward served his country as a Lieutenant at Fort Hood, Texas. He later received his Master’s degree in Education from The University of Houston. He was a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. But Edward’s passion was teaching school and helping to mold the minds of students. He chose to practice his passion for education in Galveston, Texas first at Central High School, then later at Ball High School. After teaching for some years, Edward created the first computer system for the Galveston School District. He served in this capacity until his retirement. Simultaneously, Edward worked for years with Mr. Scott Jones to create a Credit Union for African-American school employees. Upon the death of Mr. Jones, Edward took over as Manager of the Galveston Employees Federal Credit Union. As the years passed, Edward was proud that the credit union was not only the financial institution for African-American school employees, but for all employees, regardless of race. But Edward never forgot his passion for students. He spent countless hours representing the interests of the less fortunate, as a member of the Housing Authority Board, in City Council meetings, at School Board meetings and more. Edward Clack was a much admired civil rights leader in Galveston, Texas. He was a champion of the underdog. He is survived by his adoring wife, Cindi Walker Clack; his children: Edwina Clack, Angela Clack, Valhalla (Christopher) Holeman and Odin (Rachelle) Clack; five grandchildren, Christian, Myles, Coale, Laten and Edward Dean; an older brother and sister, James (Corrine) Clack and Mildred Clack; his sister-in-law Fern (Eli) Jones; brothers-in-law Kelly (Miriam) Walker and David (Maria) Walker and many nieces and nephews.
