Sherman Ray Elias graduated from Ball High School in Galveston, Texas in 1981. He then went on to Prairie View A & M University, where he received his bachelors in Mathematics and Computer Science. While there he ran track and was a two time NAIA All American. He later attended University of Houston clear Lake, and received his teacher certification.
Sherman returned to Galveston and in 1990-91 and became a teacher/coach at Ball High School. Over the years he has coached many state qualifying and champion runners in track and cross country. He work his way up through the Math department receiving several awards and honors. This past year he was named one of Galveston Country’s Top 50 Educators. In 2012 he became the Mathematics Department Chairman. In this capacity, he led a team of 17-21 math teachers in coordinating subjects from Fundamental Mathematics to Calculus CD. He served in that capacity until retirement in 2020.
Sherman Ray Elias was inducted into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Gamma Pi Lambda Chapter on December 5, 1993 in Galveston, Texas. He has held many positions, including Past President. He now serves as IMDP Coordinator.He also has been active on the Panhellenic Council of Greeks, serving as president from 2001 -2005.
Sherman is currently married to Juanita, his wife of 25 years. They share two children, April, and Terrel (Shontae). He also has a grandson Jase (3yrs) who keeps PaPa on his toes.
After retirement, Sherman spends most of his time on the golf course, cooking, and traveling. He still helps at the school and in the community any way he can. He has also recommitted his self to the work of Alpha Phi Alpha by becoming more active instate and national projects.
