| Calvin Carl Singleton, Sr., age 74, passed away peacefully in Victoria on February 22, 2009. He was born on August 15,1934 to Jerry and Isabel Singleton at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. He joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church at an early age and he became a Sunday School teacher and later Sunday School Superintendent at the church. |
| He attended George Washington Carver Elementary School in Galveston and was a graduate of Central High School in 1951. While at Central, he played the trumpet in the band for four years. |
| After completing high school, Calvin joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after four years of service. He attended and graduated from Texas Southern University with a degree in Industrial Education. |
| Following graduation, he married Patricia Groves and during this union, their son Calvin Carl Singleton, Jr. was born. He began his teaching career in 1959, in the Victoria Public Schools becoming one of the first African American Teachers to integrate the school district. His students’ projects were highly regarded all over the state and were displayed throughout the Victoria Community. He later relocated to the Galveston Public Schools in 1971 and continued his highly successful teaching career until his retirement in 1990. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc. |
| He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Isabel Singleton, three brothers, Jerry, Singleton, Jr., Robert Lee Singleton, and Harold Singleton; four aunts, Maggie Curtis, Carrie Valdez, Elizabeth Griffith, and Farrie Bluitt. |
| He leaves to cherish his memory, son Calvin Jr., and wife Cherie, two grandsons, Carlton and Clinton Singleton, all of Victoria; his adopted son, Patrick Bates of Texas City; one adopted great granddaughter, De’ Niqua Johnson, two adopted great grandsons, Darrell Lewis of Galveston and Keaton Bates of Houston; sister Maggie L. Williams and husband Ennis of Galveston; two brothers Samuel Jeffery and wife Katherine of Texas City and Donald Singleton and wife Joyce of Texas City; devoted friend and companion, Mary Louise Henderson and her family of Galveston; devoted niece Sheryl Jeffery; special friend Ben Jacquet and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. |
